Shortly after I met my business partner, Mary Sullivan, (she with the Farrah Fawcett hair), I was introduced to one of her many successful clients – a writer/director named Karey Kirkpatrick. Among Karey’s many writing credits are hit movies like James and the Giant Peach, Chicken Run, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Smurfs 2, Charlotte’s Web, Rescuers Down Under, and so forth. He also directed and wrote Over the Hedge, Imagine, Smallfoot, and blah, blah, blah. Then he wrote a fantastic Broadway musical called Something Rotten!, which ran for over two years and got nominated for ten Tony Awards.
I wanted to talk to Karey about all of that stuff, but mostly, I wanted to understand why he turned down an opportunity to run a studio called DreamWorks. I mean, seriously – what writer/director in Hollywood would say “no thanks” to Jeffery Katzenberg?
The answer is in the video.
