National Big Money

From the MRW Water Cooler

Q: Mike,

I am sitting here thinking as I watch a NFL game and those players make six figures or more in salary. And there is stars, like yourself who make six figures or more for whatever you do. Then you have guys like plumbers and all who are lucky if they make 40 thousand a year, not to mention teachers, who probably make less then your average plumber. Now you please tell me what you think is wrong with this picture. I respect what you are trying to do, but you are asked for my opinion and that is it. The guys who really do the “dirty jobs” and the teachers who teach the future of this country should be making the big money not the goofy ball players or movie stars. This country worships those players and the movie stars way too much when we should be worshiping the teachers of our children and the men and women who do the real dirty jobs, right? I am willing to bet with anyone that you don’t have a response for me either.

How much precisely, would you care to wager…?

Jeremy is correct. What you claim to value and what you choose to reward are at odds, and you are certainly not alone. It’s your actions that ultimately determine the salaries in question, not your beliefs. Certainly, a good teacher is more important than a good athlete, but you don’t reward good teachers and good plumbers when you watch television – you reward the people you believe are overpaid.
