Nice Guy
Lost in the chaos of the last week, were a few glowing words from me about the subject of our most recent episode of People You Should Know, and my sincere suggestion that you make his acquaintance at your first opportunity. His name is Rusty Durham, and like everyone else we’ve featured on this program, he’s another one of those neighbors you wish you had. Not only is Rusty an all-around nice guy who everyone instinctively likes, he’s dedicated an extraordinary amount of time fixing up broken bicycles and giving them to the homeless.
As is often the case when I spend time with people like Rusty, I left not knowing exactly why he volunteers so much of himself to serve others. Does he do it for them? Does he do it for himself? Does he do it for God? Or, does the “why” not really matter?
Beats me. After a hundred episodes celebrating bloody-do-goodery in all its permutations, I still don’t know why nice people do nice things. Are they nice form the jump? Or do their actions make them so? All I know for sure is that the world, and Florida in particular, is better off with Rusty in it.
Give this a look, and tell me if you don’t agree…
