Father’s Day al Fresco Fiasco – by Mike Rowe

When I was eight years old, my Father bought a picnic table at a yard sale for a dollar. A whole picnic table, complete with two separate benches. For one dollar. He brought the thing home in the back of the old station wagon – the one with fake wood paneling on the side – and summoned his wife and sons to examine another tangible expression of true thrift.   “Gather round boys and have a look. They wanted twenty-five dollars for this down at The Sears. Can you believe it? Twenty-five dollars! Your old man just picked it up on Read More

Career Choice Priorities

Letter to Mike and company I saw your talk on TED.tv..and wanted to tell you..  I have a 19 year old son who watches your program religiously. He’s a very bright kid; talked for a long time about going into law. A year or so ago..I stopped hearing so much about that. He graduates from highschool in a week or so. Two weeks ago, he sat down with me and said..mom? This is what I want to do. This summer, instead of heading to Oregon to work for his uncle, he’s enrolled in an apprentice program for carpentry. What Color Is Your Collar and Does It Limit or Matter When Looking For The “Good Life”?

From the MRW Water Cooler In reading some of your writings I wondered if you feel blue-collar workers are better, work harder or are happier than white-collar workers? Is wishing for a better life for our children limited to one or the other “collars” or is it just the universal hope for “the good life” for our families? — M The reason I think blue and white are so tough to balance, has to do with he fact that we tend to see them as opposites, like weights on different ends of a seesaw. A healthy society knows that each Read More

William of Occam, the American Economy and Jumping Off Buildings – huh?

From the MRW Water Cooler: Q:  At the risk of sounding like an anarchist, or worse, “anti-American” (whatever the hell that means) can I postulate the obvious..Ocham’s Razor, as it were… Won’t most Consumers want to pay the best price for the best version of the commodity they wish to purchase, be it a car or a house or a Washing Machine? Deep down, when dollars are tight, will the averge American-Joe chose to spend more for a car that was “built American” or “built by a non-bailout company” if they can get a better car for less cash elsewhere, Read More

From the Water Cooler: Ford Pays for its Prudence

May 30, 2009 I was waiting at the Toyota dealer for my 30,000 checkup, it took forever. While sitting with other people in the same situation (i.e. trapped without our vehicles) we began talking, of course about cars and bailouts and dealerships. Several people said their next car would be a Ford, they wanted to reward them for not taking bailout money. I thought this article was an interesting slant on the situation. Quote: “While General Motors and Chrysler will emerge from the government restructuring wringer with significantly reduced debt, Ford will still likely be obliged to repay its lenders. Read More

Mike Rowe – So, where were we…

May 25, 2009 Ah yes, I remember – changing the way the way the country feels about hard work, celebrating the trades, and challenging the prevailing definition of a “good job.” It’s all coming back to me. Forgive my scarcity here of late – distractions mount from all sides, as vocation and vacation collide with personal injury and holiday festivities. Let’s work backwards. Today started with a phone call from a retired general, who has become a friend and supporter of mrW. Retired generals get up early, even on Memorial Day, and this one is not terribly concerned about waking the Read More

Mike Rowe – Maximist or Minimalist?

From Mike’s forum on Discovery: Q: I was wondering have your views changed on being a minimalist? I have a friend who has a lot of money. I hate to spend money. I have always said I would never pay a lot for a car, but my friend just paid $100,000 for a vehicle, to her that was inexpensive. She feels like she is being a minimalist. It made me wonder if my perception of what is inexpensive and being a minimalist would change if I suddenly had more money. You’ve stated you’re a minimalist and don’t want things, what Read More

Monday, September 1, 2008 “Ok, Here we go…Hello America, it’s me, Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe here to talk to you on Labor Day at approximately 6:15 in the evening from my “palatial” home in beautiful San Francisco about mikeroweworks.com. By the end of the year mikeroweworks.com will be up and running. Whew, I’ve said it. So now it has Read More

Is it really about the AIG Bonuses??

From MRW Water Cooler: Q: We were lucky enough to get quarterly bonuses for the last two years. This was in lieu of a hourly raise. When things in the company got tight, bonuses were cut. It wasn’t so difficult to adjust to, though, because it wasn’t money we were used to having every paycheck. It was BONUS. I’m thinking this is the way bonuses should be. – Terra Hi Terra Many people share your view, which makes me think a better term than “bonus” should be used to refer to these payouts. For many, a “bonus” is not an Read More

Mike’s Letter to President Obama

30 January 2009 President Barack Obama 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Washington DC “For everywhere we look, there is work to be done.” Dear Mr. President, Much of what you said on January 20tt struck a chord, but nothing matched the simplicity or truth of that particular observation. I am awed by the task at hand, and compelled to tell you about mikeroweWORKS, a public awareness campaign designed to reinvigorate the trades, reinforce the importance of skilled labor, and draw attention to our crumbling infrastructure. My name’s Mike Rowe, and I host a program on the Discovery Channel called Dirty Jobs. Dirty Read More

Mike Offers a Potential Eagle Scout His Eagle Perspective

Still: Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean and Reverent…okay maybe not so clean!  From Mike’s forum on Discovery: Q: Mike, I’m not sure where I heard that you are an Eagle Scout, which brings me to my question. Could you PLEASE take a moment & post to my 13 year old son Kelby & encourage him to finish scouting (& anything else that will help with this?) Reason I’m asking is that he only lacks 1 1/2 – 2 years in reaching Eagle, but some of his buddies have got him to thinking scouting isn’t Read More

The Only One Responsible for My Own Safety is Me

From MRW Water Cooler: Q: My husband works on the oilrigs as a well tester. We watched you folks do so without any eye protection! Are you crazy? Drilling a hole with no protective eyewear? Between him, a well tester, and me, a workers’ compensation lawyer, we’re cringing! Somebody could LOSE AN EYE! Seriously – Safety First, fellas! Banking, Debt & Markets

Is It Any Wonder the Markets Continue to Sink? From MRW Water Cooler: Click here for article from Investor’s Business Daily Q: “A $75 billion bailout for 9 million Americans who face foreclosure, regardless of how they got into financial trouble, is the government’s answer to the housing crunch. Many Americans who have scrupulously kept up with payments are steaming at the thought of subsidizing those who’ve been profligate or irresponsible. With recent data showing that as much as 55% of those who get foreclosure aid end up defaulting anyway, a signal has been sent that America has gone from Read More

Mike Rowe on Dirty Jobs and Being Green (Men’s Health)

As Originally Seen In Men’s Health Magazine We gave Dirty Jobs’ Mike Rowe the choice of being interviewed during his cover photo shoot, or writing in the first person about his views on the environment. He passed on both opportunities, opting instead to interview himself from his over-priced hotel room in Santa Monica. Here are some excerpts from that exclusive, one on one conversation. There’s a rumor going around that Dirty Jobs is the greenest show on television. Does that surprise you? Not really. I’m the one spreading it. Any truth to it? Plenty. More than half of the 200 jobs we’ve profiled Read More

It’s A Dirty Job, And I Love It!

As originally published on Forbes.com It’s A Dirty Job, And I Love It! by Mike Rowe, 12.09.08 Whether it’s milking venomous spiders or picking up roadkill, the secret to career fulfillment is not to follow your passions, but to chase your opportunities. I’ve been thinking about the first time I castrated a lamb with my teeth. (It’s a real job, I swear.) I was anxious, and judging by the sounds coming from the lamb, I wasn’t the only one. He was propped up on the fence rail, pinned in place by a cheerful rancher named Albert, who was holding the Read More
