Let’s Talk About Septums and Scrotums (Ep. 262)

The title of this week’s podcast is a bit misleading since scrotums barely make it into the conversation. They do however, make it into the song you’ll hear at the end of my fascinating chat with James Nestor – a song written by a listener who accepted my challenge last June, to write a melody that captured the postoperative, drug induced nightmare that followed my septoplasty, and my father’s postoperative nightmare that followed his hernia surgery, and resulted in a (temporarily) enlarged scrotum. I challenged listeners of this podcast to capture the weirdness of those events in song, and amazingly, several did. Today, for reasons that will soon me made clear, I’m sharing one of those noble efforts. But I digress.

James Nestor is the author of Breath, a book that literally changed my life. I’ve wanted to talk to him for years, and our conversation is one of my favorites to date. (I know I say that a lot, but it is what it is.) This one goes to some rather unexpected places, as all good conversations do, but mostly, I hope it will get more people to breathe better. That’s what his book did for me, and I bet it will do the same for you. Enjoy our chat along with the strangest song you’ll hear today.
