The NAPA in Question

Six months ago, when I was invited to speak at Napa, I said sure. Living in Northern California, I’ve visited Napa many times, and always enjoyed myself. Plus, it would be super convenient.

A few months later, when I learned the Napa in question was the National Asphalt Paving Association, and the meeting was 3000 miles to the east, I was no less enthused. Because NAPA is no less important than Napa. More so, in fact. Aside from employing over 300,000 people and building America’s roads and highways, NAPA has committed in the coming year to emphasize the thousands of excellent opportunities currently available in the asphalt and paving industry. I think this is an important and worthwhile goal, and my foundation is happy to assist in whatever we can. Without support and leadership from these kinds of organizations, Americas skills gap will continue to widen – bad news for anyone who shares my addiction smooth roads. I wish every success to all the companies present today. You guys are doing important work. Good luck in 2019.

Mike

PS. Along with a terrific crowd, NAPA was kind enough to send 2 bottles of excellent Cabernet to my room. So really, it was just like being in Napa…
